Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs): Safe, Professional Transportation for Teens

West Shield Adolescent Services provides compassionate, specialized therapeutic transportation for adolescents to and from Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs) across the U.S. Our mission is to move your child safely—by ground or air—while protecting dignity, privacy, and family relationships at every step.

Important Disclaimer:
West Shield Adolescent Services is only a transportation provider. We do not recommend, select, or consult on treatment programs and cannot advise where a child should go for care. For independent placement guidance, please work with a professional educational consultant, such as those found through the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) at https://www.iecaonline.com/. We also coordinate transportation to programs listed in the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) https://natsap.org/ member directory at natsap.org. We do not endorse or certify individual programs; any references to directories are for location and coordination purposes only.

What Is a Residential Treatment Center?

Residential Treatment Centers are structured, clinically supervised settings where adolescents receive 24/7 care, therapeutic support, and schooling. Families choose RTCs for a range of concerns—emotional, behavioral, relational, or mental-health challenges—often after working with clinicians and independent consultants to determine the right level of care.

Our Role: Transportation—Only

We specialize in the logistics and the human side of getting your child from point A to point B:

Pre-Trip Planning

We coordinate with parents/guardians and the destination program’s admissions team to confirm arrival windows, intake procedures, and any special instructions.

Safety & Professionalism

Trauma-informed, non-violent crisis intervention–informed approach; discreet travel planning; attention to medications and documentation provided by the family.

Ground or Air Travel

Direct-to-program handoffs, including airport transfers, multi-leg itineraries, and coordination with program staff.

Dignified Support

Age-appropriate conversation, calm de-escalation, and clear communication with caregivers throughout the trip

Secure Handoffs

We escort your child to the admitting staff and confirm the handoff—so you know they’ve arrived safely.

Again, we do not advise on program selection. If you need placement guidance, please consult an IECA member consultant (iecaonline.com).

Programs We Commonly Transport To

We routinely coordinate with RTC admissions teams nationwide, including many programs that appear in the NATSAP member directory (natsap.org). This directory is a helpful way to see a broad range of locations and program types; however, it is not a recommendation or endorsement. Always rely on independent, qualified guidance—such as IECA consultants—for program selection.

Why Families Choose RTCs (and What Outcomes Research Shows)

Families often consider placement after other supports haven’t been enough. While every child and program is unique, recent multi-program data summarized by NATSAP (2017–2023; 8,079 clients across 51 member programs) reported significant decreases in symptoms among wilderness and residential treatment clients, including:

  • Depression, anxiety, and fearfulness

  • Aches/pains without medical cause

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Aggression, defiance, and conflict

  • Concentration/attention/impulsivity challenges

  • Suicidal ideation, self-harm, and hallucinations

Average self-reported global health scores for wilderness therapy and RTC clients shifted from the unhealthy range at admission to the healthy range at discharge and post-treatment, with caregivers also reporting notable improvements. Some nuances remain—such as sustaining mental-health gains over time and differences across gender identities—which the field continues to study and improve.

Note: Outcomes vary by individual and program; research is ongoing. West Shield does not guarantee outcomes and cannot advise which program to choose.
